24 inch monitor dimensions

The 24 inch is the size that stopped being the default and is still the right answer more often than people expect. The reason is arithmetic: two of them fit a standard desk, which two 27s do not.

Which size do you mean?

• 53.1 cm by 29.9 cm is the screen of a true 24 inch 16:9 panel, worked out from the 61 cm diagonal. It is the figure to compare monitors by.
• About 54.7 cm by 32.5 cm is the monitor with its bezels. This is the width the desk has to hold, and the figure that has to fit twice if you plan a pair.
• About 21.5 in wide and 16.3 in tall is the monitor on its stand: the body height plus about 9 cm of stand. Quoted together these look like the size of the screen, which is how a 24 inch ends up described as 21.5 by 16.3.

23.8 inch or 24 inch

Many monitors sold as 24 inch have a 23.8 inch panel inside, and a few measure 23.6 or 24.1. A 23.8 inch 16:9 screen is 52.7 by 29.6 cm, which is about 0.4 cm narrower than a true 24 and carries the same 1,920 by 1,080 pixels at about 93 pixels per inch. The name on the box is rounded to the nearest whole number, so the panel size on the spec sheet is the figure to plan with.

A difference that small never shows on a desk. It matters only for a gap measured to the centimetre and for a matched pair, where two screens of slightly different size show a step where their edges meet.

16:9 and 16:10 at 24 inches

Most 24 inch monitors are 16:9. A 16:10 panel at the same diagonal is narrower and taller: 51.7 cm by 32.3 cm against 53.1 cm by 29.9 cm. In short, you give up a little width for a little height, and the extra rows suit documents and code more than film.

Against the 24, the 22 inch is 8% narrower with 16% less screen, and the 25 inch is 4% wider with 9% more.

The step down and the step up are both small, which is why the 24 feels like the middle of the range. The step to the 27 is the one that changes the desk.

Compare any two screens

Side by side, the 27 inch comes out 6.6 cm wider and 3.7 cm taller, with 12.5% more diagonal and 26.6% more screen: a real jump, not a modest one. The 24 against 27 write-up goes through which is sharper and which suits the desk.

How much desk does it need?

A single 24 inch monitor uses 46% of a standard 120 cm desk and leaves 65.3 cm free, enough for a keyboard, a mug and a notebook without moving anything. Two side by side need about 111.5 cm, counting a 2 cm gap. That is too much for a 100 cm desk and fits a 120 cm one with about 8.5 cm to spare.

At 0.5 m to 0.7 m for desk work and 0.4 m to 0.6 m for games, a 24 inch monitor fills 42° to 56° and 48° to 64° of your view. Closer than the near end and you start to turn your head to reach the corners; further back and small text gets harder to read.

Full HD, QHD or 4K at 24 inches

Pixel density separates the three: 92 pixels per inch at 1080p, 122 at 1440p and 184 at 4K. By the usual 20/20 convention of 60 pixels per degree, single pixels disappear from about 1 m at 1080p, from 0.7 m at 1440p and from 0.5 m at 4K. At a desk, then, 1080p falls short of that limit, 1440p is close to it and 4K is past it. A 24 inch at Full HD still looks sharper than a 27 at the same resolution, though 1440p is the better pairing for text.

The 60 is a convention and not a limit. A 2025 paper in Nature Communications reported a mean near 94 pixels per degree for fine black and white detail, so a careful reader of small text may still prefer 1440p at this size.

Stands, arms and mounting

Mounting holes, where a monitor has any, follow the VESA standard and are listed in millimetres on the spec sheet. Some stands are fixed to the panel with no pattern at all, so look before you plan an arm. A clamp-on arm gives back the depth of the stand, which helps on a shallow desk, and the monitor’s weight on the spec sheet should sit inside the arm’s rating.

Who a 24 inch suits

A 24 inch suits a standard desk, a second screen beside a laptop, and any setup that plans on two displays. From 0.5 m to 0.7 m it fills a comfortable share of the view without needing a deep desk.

If you spend the day in a spreadsheet, a 27 inch gives more room for windows, and how far to sit from a 27 inch monitor shows the extra distance it asks for. If the desk is shallow or you sit close, the 22 inch is the more comfortable fit.
