An ultrawide is not a big monitor. It is a wide one, and the difference is the whole reason to measure before buying. A 34 inch ultrawide is wider than a 32 inch monitor and shorter than a 27.
Which size do you mean?
- 78.9 cm by 33.6 cm is the screen of a 21:9 panel measured straight across. It follows from the 86.4 cm diagonal, and it is the figure to compare monitors by.
- 79.6 cm is the same screen measured along the curve. The two differ because the panel bends, and most 34 inch ultrawides do.
- About 80.5 cm by 36.2 cm is the monitor with its bezels, and about 46.2 cm tall on its stand. This is the width a desk has to hold.

What the curve does
A curve of 1800R bends the panel on a radius of 1.8 m. Along the surface the screen is 79.6 cm wide and straight across it is 78.9 cm, which is why two listings can quote 79.6 cm and 78.9 cm for the same monitor. Both are right about different things, and the straight-across figure is the one that matters for a desk.
The curve also pulls the ends of the panel forward by about 4.6 cm relative to the middle. That is depth added to the stand’s 22 cm, so a 34 inch ultrawide takes more of a shallow desk than its stand suggests.

On a 140 cm desk the monitor takes 57% of the width and sits well clear of the edges. The top of the panel is about 46.2 cm above the surface, about the same as a 27 inch and well below a 32 inch.

There is no smaller ultrawide on the list. The 38 inch is 12% wider than the 34 and has 24% more screen, which suits a deeper desk.

34 inch ultrawide against 32 inch
The 32 inch 16:9 is 8.1 cm narrower and 6.3 cm taller than the 34 ultrawide, and has 6.6% more screen area, even though its diagonal is 5.9% less. That is the surprise of the shape: the ultrawide’s longer diagonal buys less picture, because it is stretched along a thin strip. What it buys is width in a single window. Compare any two screens draws this pair on the same scale, or any other.

A single 34 inch ultrawide uses 67% of a standard 120 cm desk and 80% of a compact 100 cm one, leaving 19.5 cm there. Two side by side need about 163 cm, counting a 2 cm gap, which is more than any desk in the table offers.

For desk work a 34 inch ultrawide suits a seat 0.6 m to 0.8 m from the screen, and for games 0.6 m to 0.9 m. Work is judged on the central 16:9 part of the screen, 59.7 cm wide, which fills 42° to 56° of your view, because the edges of an ultrawide sit in your peripheral vision. Games and films use the whole width, which fills 48° to 64° for games. At 65 cm the whole screen spans about 62°, and at 85 cm about 50°.

Most 34 inch ultrawides are 3,440 by 1,440, which is 110 pixels per inch. That is almost exactly the density of a 27 inch monitor at 1440p, spread over a wider panel, so text is as sharp on one as on the other. By the 20/20 convention of 60 pixels per degree, single pixels stop showing from about 0.8 m, which is the far end of the desk-work range of 0.6 m to 0.8 m. Closer in, the pixel grid can show.
The convention is a rough one. A 2025 paper in Nature Communications measured a mean near 94 pixels per degree for fine black and white detail, so someone who reads a lot of small text may see the pixel grid from a little further back.
Stands, arms and mounting
A monitor’s VESA pattern, where it has one, is listed in millimetres on the spec sheet. A wide panel puts more leverage on an arm than a narrow one of the same weight, so check the arm’s rating against the monitor’s weight, and fit an arm that can reach out far enough to clear the curve. An arm gives back the stand’s depth, which is the most useful thing a deep monitor on a shallow desk can gain.
Who a 34 inch ultrawide suits
A 34 inch ultrawide suits a desk 100 cm or wider, and a seat 0.6 m or more from the screen. It gives the width of two windows side by side without a bezel down the middle, which suits timelines, spreadsheets and anything with a wide canvas.
It is the wrong size for a shallow desk, where the stand and the curve take the depth, and it is not a way to get more height. If the desk is narrow, a 32 inch monitor takes less width for about the same picture. What size monitor do I need works from the desk and the task.

- For desk work, between about 0.6 m and 0.8 m, which is the distance at which the central 16:9 part of the screen fills 42° to 56° of your view. The whole width spans about 62° at 65 cm and about 50° at 85 cm, and the edges sit in your peripheral vision. For games, between about 0.6 m and 0.9 m.
- What resolution is a 34 inch ultrawide?
- Most are 3,440 by 1,440, called UWQHD, which is about 110 pixels per inch at this size. That is the same density as a 27 inch at 1440p, spread over a wider panel, so text looks as sharp as it does on the smaller monitor.
- Does the curve change the size of a 34 inch ultrawide?
- A little. The sizes here assume a curve of 1800R, which makes the screen 78.9 cm wide straight across and 79.6 cm along the surface, and brings the ends of the panel about 4.6 cm forward of its middle. That depth is on top of the stand, so a shallow desk has less room for a keyboard.
How we worked this out
The picture is exact for its shape. A 21:9 panel's width is the diagonal times 64, divided by the square root of 64² + 27²; the height uses 27 in place of 64. For 34 inches that gives 79.6 cm by 33.6 cm, measured along the surface. The panel is curved on a radius of 180 cm, so straight across it measures 78.9 cm.
Everything marked approx. is an estimate for a typical set of this size, not a measurement of one model. We assume a bezel of 0.8 cm at each side, 0.8 cm at the top and 1.8 cm at the bottom, 10 cm of stand height and 22 cm of stand depth. Real ones vary by a centimetre or two, so the spec sheet of the model you are buying has the last word.
Viewing distances come from the horizontal angle the picture fills in your view. Sharpness uses pixels per degree: 60 of them is the one-arcminute limit of 20/20 vision, past which individual pixels cannot be told apart. For work, coding and design on a screen this wide the angle is taken across its central 16:9 part, 59.7 cm wide, because the edges sit in your peripheral vision; games and films use the whole width.
