The 40 inch ultrawide is the sharp one. Everything about the size follows from its resolution: it carries the pixels of a 4K screen across a wider panel, and it asks for scaling and distance because of it.
Which size do you mean?
- 92.3 cm by 40 cm is the screen of a 21:9 panel measured straight across, which is what a desk has to match.
- 93.4 cm is the same screen along its 1800R curve. The two differ by about a centimetre because the curve is gentle.
- About 93.9 cm by 42.6 cm is the monitor with its bezels, and about 54.6 cm tall on its stand.

Drawn to scale
On a 140 cm desk the monitor takes 67% of the width. It is 40 cm tall, which puts the top edge about 54.6 cm above the surface on a typical stand, a little above eye level for most people at an ordinary desk, so use the lowest setting the stand allows. The curve is gentle: it brings the ends of the panel about 6.2 cm forward of the middle.
Next to the sizes either side
The 38 inch is 4% narrower than the 40 with 11% less screen, and the 45 inch is 6% wider with 19% more, though at far lower density. The 38 inch page and the 45 inch page have their tables.
| Size | Active width | Width | Screen area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 38" | 88.2 cm | −4% | −11% |
| 45" | 97.7 cm | +6% | +19% |
40 inch against 34 inch ultrawide
The 34 inch ultrawide is 13.4 cm narrower and 6.5 cm shorter than the 40, with 28.3% less screen area. The 34 inch has 15% less diagonal than the 40, and what the extra size buys is pixels as well as room: the 34 inch is usually 3,440 by 1,440 and the 40 inch 5,120 by 2,160. The 34 inch page lists the same figures for the more common size.
How much desk does it need?
| Space | Size | Fits? | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact desk | 100 cm × 50 cm | Fits | 94% of the width, 6.1 cm spare in all |
| Standard desk | 120 cm × 60 cm | Fits | 78% of the width, 26.1 cm spare in all |
| Large desk | 140 cm × 70 cm | Fits | 67% of the width, 46.1 cm spare in all |
| Deep desk | 160 cm × 80 cm | Fits | 59% of the width, 66.1 cm spare in all |
The body is about 93.9 cm, which is 78% of a 120 cm desk with 26.1 cm to spare, and 94% of a 100 cm one with 6.1 cm. Two 27 inch 4K screens side by side are about 125 cm of desk with 7,680 by 2,160 pixels and a bezel down the middle. The 40 inch is about 31 cm narrower, with two thirds of the pixels and no seam.
How far to sit
| Used for | Sit | In feet | Field of view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work / productivity | 0.7 m – 0.9 m | 2 ft 2 in – 3 ft 0 in | 42–56° |
| Coding | 0.7 m – 0.9 m | 2 ft 3 in – 3 ft 0 in | 42–54° |
| Design | 0.6 m – 0.9 m | 2 ft 1 in – 2 ft 11 in | 44–58° |
| Gaming | 0.7 m – 1 m | 2 ft 5 in – 3 ft 5 in | 48–64° |
| Movies | 0.7 m – 1 m | 2 ft 4 in – 3 ft 3 in | 50–66° |
| Mixed | 0.8 m – 1.1 m | 2 ft 7 in – 3 ft 8 in | 45–61° |
For desk work a 40 inch ultrawide suits a seat 0.7 m to 0.9 m away, judged on the central 16:9 part of the screen, 71.2 cm wide, which fills 42° to 56° of your view. For games, which use the whole width, it is 0.7 m to 1 m, filling 48° to 64°. At 75 cm the whole panel spans about 63°, and at 95 cm about 52°. A deeper desk, or the panel on an arm at the back edge, makes the longer seat easy.
5,120 by 2,160 at 40 inches
| Resolution | Pixels | Pixels per inch | Sharp from | Pixels invisible from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5K2K | 5120 × 2160 | 139 | 0.5 m | 0.6 m |
Across 92.3 cm of screen, 5,120 pixels gives 139 pixels per inch, which is where a 32 inch 4K monitor sits and well above the 110 of a 34 or 38 inch ultrawide. By the 20/20 convention of 60 pixels per degree, single pixels stop showing from about 0.6 m, closer than any desk seat, so text is smooth.
Most people run it at 125% scaling. At 125% you have an effective 4,096 by 1,728: roughly the room of a 38 inch at 3,840 by 1,600, with text drawn from about a quarter more pixels in each direction. If you have used a 4K monitor and then gone back to 1440p, this is the ultrawide that feels like the 4K. A 2025 paper in Nature Communications measured a mean of about 94 pixels per degree for fine detail, and at this density the panel is past it from any desk seat.
Stands, arms and mounting
The VESA pattern, where a monitor has one, is listed in millimetres on the spec sheet. A wide panel like this one puts leverage on an arm, so check the rating against the monitor’s weight and the reach against the desk. An arm that clamps to the back edge gives back the stand’s 26 cm, which is the quickest way to the seat distance the size asks for.
Who a 40 inch ultrawide suits
A 40 inch ultrawide suits someone who works in text, spreadsheets or timelines and wants the density of a 4K screen across a wide panel, on a desk 100 cm wide or more and deep enough for a seat about 0.8 m away.
It is the wrong size for a shallow desk or a seat close to the screen. If the budget points at 1440p, the 34 inch ultrawide is the lower-resolution neighbour, and ultrawide against dual monitors sets out the trade against a pair.
Common questions
- What resolution is a 40 inch ultrawide?
- Usually 5,120 by 2,160, often called 5K2K: a 4K screen with 1,280 more pixels across. At this size that is about 139 pixels per inch, the density of a 32 inch 4K monitor, so most people run it at 125%, which leaves an effective workspace of 4,096 by 1,728.
- Is a 40 inch ultrawide worth it over a 38 inch?
- Only if you want sharper text and not just more room. The 40 is about 5% wider and 8% taller than a 38, and holds far more pixels, but at 125% scaling it shows a workspace of about 4,096 by 1,728, about 15% more than a 38 at 100%. What you gain is clarity.
- Is a 40 inch ultrawide the same as two 27 inch 4K monitors?
- No. Two 27 inch screens side by side are about 124.7 cm of desk with 7,680 by 2,160 pixels and a bezel down the middle. The 40 inch is about 31 cm narrower, with two thirds of the pixels and no seam.
- How far should I sit from a 40 inch ultrawide?
- For desk work, between about 0.7 m and 0.9 m, which is where the central 16:9 part of the screen, about 71 cm wide, fills 42° to 56° of your view, and for games between about 0.7 m and 1 m. At 75 cm the whole panel spans about 63° across, and at 95 cm about 52°.
- Why do some listings say a 40 inch ultrawide is 93.4 cm wide?
- That is the screen along its gentle 1800R curve, 93.4 cm. Straight across it is 92.3 cm, and with its bezels the monitor is about 93.9 cm wide, or 36.4 and 37 inches. The curve brings the ends of the panel about 6.2 cm forward of the middle.
How we worked this out
Everything marked approx. assumes a bezel of 0.8 cm at each side, 0.8 cm at the top and 1.8 cm at the bottom, 12 cm of stand height and 26 cm of stand depth. Real sets vary by a centimetre or two, so the spec sheet of the model you are buying has the last word.
The panel is curved on a radius of 180 cm, so its 93.4 cm of picture measured along the surface spans 92.3 cm straight across, and the straight figure is the one a desk has to take.
For work, coding and design on a screen this wide, the viewing angle is taken across its central 16:9 part, 71.2 cm wide, because the edges sit in your peripheral vision; games and films use the whole width.
