Why do some listings say a 45 inch ultrawide is 105 cm wide?

That is the screen along its curve, 105.1 cm. Straight across, which is what a desk has to hold, it is 97.7 cm, with 98.9 cm for the monitor including its bezels, or 38.5 and 38.9 inches. The curve is a tight 800R, which is why the straight-line width is so much less than the length of the glass.

The curve is deep

The site assumes a tight 800R curve for this size, and the figure it gives is striking: the ends of the panel stand about 17.1 cm forward of its centre. That is depth your desk has to supply on top of a stand about 26 cm deep and 30 cm for a keyboard, about 73 cm in all. On a 60 cm desk the stand has to hang off the back edge or go on an arm. The upside of the curve is width: 105.1 cm of screen takes up less than a metre of desk, about 98.9 cm, which is what makes the size possible at all.

For games that is part of the effect. For reading it means tilting your head back, and the lowest stand setting is the one to use.

The 34 inch ultrawide is 18.7 cm narrower and 11.5 cm shorter than the 45, with 39.8% less screen area, and it has the same 3,440 by 1,440 pixels. A 45 inch ultrawide at 3,440 by 1,440 is 83 pixels per inch, which is well below a 24 inch at 1080p. In games, viewed from further back, the size carries it. For spreadsheets and code at 65 cm the letters are visibly made of pixels. By the 20/20 convention of 60 pixels per degree, single pixels stop showing from about 1 m, which is the far end of the desk-work range of 0.8 m to 1 m. Nearer than that the grid can show.

Some models at this size use 5,120 by 2,160, about 124 pixels per inch, and those change the calculation completely, so check the pixel count before anything else. A 2025 paper in Nature Communications reported a mean of about 94 pixels per degree for fine detail, so a close reader at 3,440 by 1,440 will see the grid.

Stands, arms and mounting

A monitor this wide and curved puts real leverage on an arm, so check the arm’s rating against the monitor’s weight and choose one that reaches far enough to clear the curve. The VESA pattern, where there is one, is listed in millimetres on the spec sheet. An arm also gives back the stand’s 26 cm, which on a shallow desk is the difference between fitting and not.

Who a 45 inch ultrawide suits

A 45 inch ultrawide suits a desk 120 cm wide and 75 cm deep or more, and a player who sits about a metre from the screen. It is a gaming size, and it shows in every figure on this page.

It is the wrong size for a shallow desk, a close seat or text-heavy work at 3,440 by 1,440. If the desk is narrow, a 34 inch ultrawide takes less width and less depth, and ultrawide against dual monitors sets out the trade against a pair.

Everything marked approx. assumes a bezel of 0.8 cm at each side, 0.8 cm at the top and 1.8 cm at the bottom, 12 cm of stand height and 26 cm of stand depth. Real sets vary by a centimetre or two, so the spec sheet of the model you are buying has the last word.

The panel is curved on a radius of 80 cm, so its 105.1 cm of picture measured along the surface spans 97.7 cm straight across, and the straight figure is the one a desk has to take.
