Screen dimensions calculator

Screens are sold by the diagonal, which tells you almost nothing about the space one needs. Enter a size and an aspect ratio to get the width and height that actually matter — and see it drawn at true scale.

Screens are always sold by the diagonal, in inches — including in metric countries.

16:10, 21:9 and 32:9 at the same diagonal

The diagonal alone never tells you the shape. Here is a 34 inch screen at every ratio we support — same diagonal, 4 different rectangles:

Why a 55 inch screen is not 55 inches wide

The diagonal is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose sides are the width and the height, so it is always longer than either one. A 55 inch, 16:9 screen has an active area of 47.9″ wide by 27.0″ tall — the width alone is already shorter than the 55 inch diagonal, and the height shorter still. It is why a screen never looks as big edge-to-edge as its number suggests, and why the width and height above are the numbers worth measuring a space against, not the diagonal.

To see whether a screen fits your own room or desk, use the screen size calculator.
