Best monitor size for a small desk

A small desk is two constraints wearing one name. The width decides whether the screen physically fits; the depth decides how far your eyes end up from it, and that is usually the one that actually settles the answer. A 100 cm desk that is 50 cm deep puts you at roughly 55 cm from the glass, and 55 cm is close.

Every one of those fits, and so does a 32 inch at 72.4 cm of body. Width is not the binding constraint on a single screen at this desk size — the catalogue does not run out of room until the 49 inch super-ultrawide, which needs 114.1 cm and is 14 cm wider than the desk.
What changes with the desk is not whether a size fits but how much of the desk it eats. A 27 inch takes 61% of a 100 cm desk against 51% of a standard 120 cm one. That is the difference between a monitor with space beside it for a mug and a notebook, and a monitor with 19 cm of desk left at each end.
The distance is what rules sizes out
At 55 cm from the screen, a 27 inch fills about 57° of your view. That is inside the comfortable band for work, but only just; the same screen on a 120 cm desk, sat 65 cm back, is 49° and altogether easier.

This is where the ultrawide argument on a small desk falls over. A 34 inch 21:9 is 80.5 cm of body, so it fits a 100 cm desk with 10 cm each side — but at 55 cm it spans 71° across, well past what your eyes sweep without your head joining in. It is not the desk that rejects it. It is the chair.
Two screens: the arithmetic that ends the argument
Two 24 inch panels need about 111 cm of desk with a 2 cm gap between them. On a 100 cm desk that is 11 cm short, and there is no arrangement that recovers it — the tool says so in exactly those words: needs 111 cm, you have 100.
A 32 inch with a 24 inch turned portrait beside it needs 106 cm and misses by six. The only two-window setup that fits across 100 cm is a single ultrawide, which brings back the distance problem above.
So on a genuinely small desk the honest answer is one screen, chosen well. If you need a second surface, a laptop on a stand beside the monitor uses the depth you have rather than the width you do not.

At 100 × 50 cm the engine's strongest match is a 27 inch, and its second is a 25 inch — 56.9 cm of body, 53° across, and a genuinely easier fit if you want desk space back. Below that, a 24 inch at 16:10 gives you 51.7 cm of screen and some vertical room the 16:9 sizes do not.
The one size to think twice about is a 27 inch at 1080p: 82 pixels per inch is soft at 55 cm, where the same panel at 1440p is 109. On a small desk you are sitting closer than average, which makes pixel density more visible, not less.
