How far should you sit from a 27 inch monitor?

60 to 75 cm is the honest range for a 27 inch monitor, and where you land inside it depends on what you're doing and what resolution you're running. A 27 inch panel is 59.77 cm wide — at 60 cm it fills 53° of your field of view; at 80 cm, 41°. Neither is wrong; they're different trade-offs between immersion and comfort. Sixty pixels per degree is a commonly used benchmark for where a pixel grid stops being individually resolvable. A 27 inch 1080p panel doesn't reach 60 PPD until 107 cm — well past any distance a 27 inch actually wants to sit at for field of view, which is exactly why 1080p at 27 inch consistently looks soft no matter how you sit. 1440p crosses 60 PPD around 80 cm — right at the outer edge of the field-of-view range above. 4K crosses it at about 54 cm — comfortably inside every field-of-view band this size has.
So the recommendation splits by panel
1080p: sit as far back as your desk allows, 70 cm or more, and accept that the panel will look soft up close regardless — there's no distance within a reasonable field-of-view range that also hides the pixel grid. 1440p: 70 to 80 cm is the honest answer if sharpness matters to you; 60 cm is the more common real-world distance, and it's a reasonable trade-off, just not a pixel-perfect one. 4K: 55 to 70 cm works cleanly on both counts — you can lean in for field of view without the pixel grid ever becoming the constraint.
What your desk allows
A stock monitor stand typically takes up somewhere around 18 cm of desk depth on its own for a panel this size, and your eyes sit some distance behind the desk's own front edge rather than right at it. Net effect: a 60 cm desk yields roughly 55 to 60 cm of real eye-to-screen distance, a 70 cm desk roughly 65 to 70 cm, and an 80 cm desk roughly 75 to 80 cm — which is the point at which every use case above, coding included, is genuinely satisfied. Your desk's actual depth is the real constraint here, not a preference you get to pick freely. A monitor arm recovers most of a stock stand's own footprint, typically on the order of 15 to 20 cm, turning a shallower desk into a working 1440p or even 4K setup.
Do the maths for your own desk
A 65 cm desk is a common middle ground worth working through directly. Subtract roughly 18 cm for a stock stand's own footprint, and a few centimetres more for where you actually sit relative to the front edge, and you land around 60 cm of real eye-to-screen distance — squarely in this size's comfortable range for everything except the most demanding coding sessions, which prefer closer to 70 cm. If your own desk is shallower, that gap is exactly what a monitor arm is for; if it's deeper, you're already past the point where distance is doing you any favours and the extra room is better spent elsewhere on the desk.
Height, tilt and the rest of the ergonomics
The top of the screen belongs at or just below seated eye level, not above it — ergonomics guidance from bodies like OSHA generally recommends keeping the top of a display at or below eye height, not using it as a ceiling to tilt up toward. The screen should sit roughly perpendicular to your line of sight rather than angled off to one side for long periods.
