Screen size is a lie

A 55 inch TV is 121.76 cm wide. That's 47.9 inches — not 55. Nothing about it actually measures 55 inches except one line, drawn corner to corner across the glass. The diagonal is a size class, not a width, and the moment you need to know whether something fits a real space, it's the wrong number to be working from. What the number actually measures

The advertised diagonal is the active picture area, corner to corner — not the body, not the bezel, not the stand or feet. The physical body typically runs 1 to 2 cm wider and taller than the active-area figure on each dimension, and some manufacturers' own spec sheets footnote an exact measured diagonal a small fraction under the class number they advertise. Always check a specific model's own spec page rather than treating the class number as an exact, guaranteed measurement.

The conversion worth memorising

For any 16:9 screen: width in cm = diagonal in inches × 2.2138; height = diagonal × 1.2453. A 55 inch works out to 121.76 × 68.49 cm; a 65 inch to 143.90 × 80.94 cm; a 75 inch to 166.04 × 93.39 cm. Every extra inch of diagonal is exactly 2.21 cm more width, for any 16:9 pair anywhere in the range.

The same conversion, for every common shape

16:9 isn't the only ratio sold, and each one has its own pair of constants, derived the exact same way — diagonal split across the ratio's own width and height components:

A 27 inch monitor illustrates the spread on its own: at 16:9 it's 59.77 cm wide; the same 27 inch diagonal at 21:9 would be about 63.0 cm wide and noticeably shorter. Real ultrawide panels vary slightly from these round-ratio figures in practice — manufacturers' true panel proportions aren't always an exact 21:9 or 32:9 despite the marketing label — so treat this table as the general method, and a specific model's own spec page as the exact figure.

Why "10 inches bigger" is 40% more TV

Area scales with the square of the diagonal, not with the diagonal itself, which is why a modest-sounding size step is always a bigger jump in actual screen than it first appears. 55 to 65 inch is an 18% increase in diagonal but a 39.7% increase in area. 65 to 85 inch is a 31% increase in diagonal and a 71% increase in area. The diagonal consistently understates the real difference, and it understates it more the bigger the jump.

And why the diagonal stops meaning anything once the shape changes

Same 34 inches: a 21:9 ultrawide monitor is about 79.6 cm wide, while a 16:9 panel of that same 34 inch diagonal would only be 75.3 cm wide. Same 49 inches: a 32:9 super ultrawide is 119.81 cm wide, against 108.5 cm for a 16:9 panel at that diagonal. The size class survives the shape change; the actual screen you get does not. The clearest version of this: a 49 inch super ultrawide monitor is only 3.8 cm taller than a 24 inch monitor (33.70 cm versus 29.89 cm) — two screens with wildly different "inch" numbers, and almost the same amount of vertical space on your desk.

Where the convention came from

Diagonal measurement dates back to the earliest circular CRT tubes, where the diagonal across the visible circular area was the only dimension that described a round screen sensibly — there was no meaningful "width" or "height" to quote instead. The convention carried over once tubes became rectangular, and a further wrinkle followed it: a CRT's overall tube glass was always somewhat larger than the portion of it you could actually see, since some of the tube sat hidden behind the bezel. That gap between labelled size and viewable size is part of why some markets required a "V" suffix (viewable diagonal) alongside the plain tube-diagonal figure, and why modern flat-panel spec sheets sometimes footnote an exact measured diagonal separately from the advertised class number. In the US specifically, that viewable-diagonal figure historically carried a "V" suffix precisely to distinguish it from the larger tube-diagonal number used elsewhere — a regional quirk that's mostly forgotten now, but the underlying gap between "the whole piece of glass" and "the bit you can actually see" is the direct ancestor of today's class-versus-measured footnote.

What to do instead

Buy to a width, not a diagonal. Measure the alcove, the media unit or the desk you actually have. Convert the diagonal you're considering using the formula above. Compare the result against your real measurement, including the 1 to 2 cm of body beyond the active area. Three numbers to write down before you shop: the available width you're fitting into, the viewing distance you actually sit at, and the body width of the exact size you're considering — not the diagonal printed on the box.
