At 77 inches the feet start deciding the answer and not the body. The set is about 171.7 cm wide, but it stands on feet 137.3 cm apart, and the two limits fail in different places.
Three widths, two limits
- 170.5 cm is the picture, the lit area from the 195.6 cm diagonal and the 16:9 shape. It is the figure to compare sizes by.
- About 171.7 cm is the set with its bezels, and the limit for a wall or a recess. A 160 cm wall is out by about 5.8 cm on each side.
- About 137.3 cm is the span between the feet, and the limit for a media unit. It is the narrower of the two, which is why a unit can hold the feet and still be shorter than the set.
A 120 cm unit cannot take the feet at all. A 150 cm unit can, with the body then overhanging the furniture by about 10.8 cm at each end, which is common and not what everyone expects to see when it arrives.

On a wall the body decides. A 140 cm × 90 cm alcove is 15.8 cm short on each side and a 160 cm × 100 cm wall 5.8 cm. A 200 cm × 120 cm wall takes it at 86% of the width, which is about as full as a wall should look, and a 260 cm × 140 cm wall leaves 44.2 cm each side.

Sit 2.8 m to 3.4 m from a 77 inch TV for everyday viewing, where it fills 28° to 34° of your view, and 2.3 m to 2.8 m for films. A 4K panel at 77 inches packs 57 pixels per inch against 29 at 1080p. By the 20/20 convention of 60 pixels per degree, single pixels stop showing from about 1.5 m at 4K and from 3.1 m at 1080p. The seat for this size is 2.8 m to 3.4 m away, so 4K is past the limit and 1080p would show its pixels. An 8K panel only matters inside 0.8 m.
The figure to treat with care is the 60. A 2025 paper in Nature Communications reported a mean of about 94 pixels per degree for fine detail, so a sharp-eyed viewer sees a little more than the convention allows, at distances still inside the seat.
Fixing it to the wall
The bracket follows the VESA pattern listed on the spec sheet, in millimetres, and has to be rated for the weight of the set. Fix it into studs or masonry and lift with two people. Mounting removes the foot-span question altogether, which is why many people at this size skip the unit. How high to mount a TV covers the height.
Who a 77 inch suits
A 77 inch suits a living room with a wall of 200 cm or more and a seat about 2.8 m to 3.4 m away. At 171.7 cm across it fills a 200 cm × 120 cm wall and sits easily on a wider one.

Everything marked approx. assumes a bezel of 0.6 cm at each side, 0.6 cm at the top and 1.2 cm at the bottom, 5 cm of foot height, feet that stand about 137.3 cm apart and 32 cm of foot depth. Real sets vary by a centimetre or two, so the spec sheet of the model you are buying has the last word.
