A 98 inch television is the size at which the practical questions stop being about the picture and start being about the house: the wall, the door, the staircase and what the mount is fixed to.
Which width do you mean?
- 217 cm is the picture, lit area only, and it is the same for every true 98 inch 16:9 set because it follows from the 248.9 cm diagonal.
- About 218.2 cm is the set with its bezels. A wall has to be wider than this, and it is the number that rules out a standard 2 m wall section.
- About 174.5 cm is the span between the feet, which a media unit has to be wide enough to take. It is wider than a 150 cm unit.

With the stand and without it
On its feet a 98 inch TV stands about 128.8 cm tall, which is 123.8 cm of set on about 5 cm of foot. The feet ask for a surface about 32 cm deep, and about 174.5 cm wide. If it goes on a unit, a 180 cm unit takes the feet and a 150 cm one does not, and the panel overhangs even a 200 cm sideboard. A wall mount avoids all of it.

The picture is 122 cm tall, close to three quarters of the figure’s height, and 217 cm across, wider than a king-size bed is long. Its height is less of a problem than its width: with the bottom edge at 60 cm the top sits at about 1.84 m, which is under 60 cm from a 2.4 m ceiling.

Drop to an 85 inch and the set is 28.8 cm narrower and 16.2 cm shorter than the 98, with 13.3% less on the diagonal and 24.8% less picture, and it is the step that turns a 98 inch wall problem into an ordinary one.

The body is 218.2 cm, so a 200 cm × 120 cm wall is 9.1 cm short on each side, and anything smaller is out. A 260 cm × 140 cm wall takes it at 84% with 20.9 cm each side, about the least that looks planned.
For furniture, a 150 cm wide unit cannot take the feet. A 180 cm wide unit takes them with the body overhanging by 19.1 cm each side, and a 200 cm wide sideboard with the body overhanging by 9.1 cm each side.
Getting it into the room
The panel is longer than a standard internal door is tall, which is about 2 m, so it cannot be carried through upright. It goes through tilted on its edge, and its box is larger than the set. The doorway is rarely the real limit. The tightest turn on the way to the room is: a half landing on a staircase, or the corner at the end of a corridor. Measure those before the set is ordered.

Everyday viewing puts the seat 3.5 m to 4.4 m from a 98 inch TV, with the picture across 28° to 34° of your view, and films 3 m to 3.5 m, across 34° to 40°. 4K or 8K on a 98 inch?

On a panel this size the pixel count does real work: 22 pixels per inch at 1080p, 45 at 4K and 90 at 8K. By the 20/20 convention of 60 pixels per degree, 4K stops showing single pixels from about 1.9 m and 1080p from 3.9 m. The seat for this size is 3.5 m to 4.4 m away, so 1080p is at the limit and 4K is well past it, and 8K matters only inside 1 m.
A 2025 paper in Nature Communications measured a mean of about 94 pixels per degree for fine detail. That puts the 4K limit nearer than the table says, and it is still inside the seat.
On the wall
A set this size is heavy, and its mount has to be fixed into something that can hold it: studs, masonry or a spreader plate behind plasterboard. A plasterboard fixing on its own is not enough. The mount needs a rating for the weight and a match for the VESA pattern of the set you buy, which is on the spec sheet. How high to mount a TV covers the height.
Who a 98 inch suits
A 98 inch suits a room built for it: a wall of 260 cm or more, a seat about 3.5 m to 4.4 m back and a route into the room that has been measured. At 218.2 cm across it fills a wide wall and overwhelms a narrow one.
It is the wrong size for a living room with the sofa 3 m from the wall. The 85 inch is the practical answer for most rooms, and the TV size calculator will show whether the wall takes this one.

- How far should you sit from a 98 inch TV?
- For everyday viewing, between about 3.5 m and 4.4 m, and for films between 3 m and 3.5 m. At 3 m the picture spans about 40° of your view, the top of the calculator’s range for films, and closer to a cinema screen than a living-room set.
- Is a 98 inch TV much bigger than a 100 inch?
- No: the 100 inch is about 4.4 cm wider and has about 4% more picture. If a wall is borderline for the 100, the 98 will not rescue it; the size that changes the wall is the 85 inch, which is 28.8 cm narrower.

Everything marked approx. assumes a bezel of 0.6 cm at each side, 0.6 cm at the top and 1.2 cm at the bottom, 5 cm of foot height, feet that stand about 174.5 cm apart and 32 cm of foot depth. Real sets vary by a centimetre or two, so the spec sheet of the model you are buying has the last word.
