TV viewing distance chart, 43 to 98 inch

A 65 inch wants 1.98 m for an immersive, THX-style 40 degree view, and 2.69 m for a relaxed, SMPTE-style 30 degree view. Neither number is more "correct" than the other — they're two different standards, built for two different rooms, and most viewing-distance calculators only ever tell you one of them without saying which.

Read it backwards
If you already know your seat-to-wall distance, here's the size range that puts you somewhere between the two standards, from immersive to relaxed:
- At 2.0 m: 50 to 65 inch
- At 2.5 m: 65 to 80 inch
- At 3.0 m: 75 to 98 inch
- At 3.5 m: 85 inch and up
The working, for any distance you actually measure: width = distance ÷ 1.866 gives the widest screen still inside the relaxed 30° SMPTE target; width = distance ÷ 1.374 gives the widest screen still inside the immersive 40° THX target. Convert width back to diagonal with diagonal = width ÷ 2.2138 for a 16:9 screen. A screen wider than the first number starts to feel like too much at that distance; narrower than the second, and you're leaving immersion on the table.
Worked through for an exact 3.00 m seat: 300 ÷ 1.866 ÷ 2.2138 works out to a 72.6 inch diagonal — the widest screen for which 3.00 m still counts as a relaxed SMPTE distance, which is why 75 inch (not 70) is the smallest size in the "3.0 m" row above; 70 inch's own SMPTE distance is only 2.89 m, just short of the seat. And 300 ÷ 1.374 ÷ 2.2138 comes out to 98.6 inch — the largest screen for which 3.00 m still counts as immersive rather than too-close, which is why 98 inch, the largest size in this chart, is still the top of that row rather than being excluded from it.
Where the two standards come from
SMPTE's roughly 30° comes out of cinema and studio-monitor seating guidance — a relaxed reference angle meant to be sustainable for long sessions without fatigue. THX's roughly 36-40° targets something closer to a cinema's front-row feel — deliberately more of your field of view, for a more immersive picture. Both describe horizontal field of view only: the angle the screen's width subtends at your eye, nothing about resolution or eyesight. Treat both as reference points for taste, not as a single objectively "right" answer — which one suits you depends on whether you want a TV or a home-cinema screen.
Which distance actually suits you
Neither standard is "more correct" — the right pick depends on what's actually on screen and who else is in the room. A dedicated home-cinema setup, competitive gaming, or a household that watches mostly films tends to sit toward the THX, immersive end of the range for each size — closer, with the screen filling more of the field of view, the way a front-of-cinema seat does. A general-purpose living-room TV shared for sport, news, and background viewing tends to suit the SMPTE, relaxed end better — further back, less of the picture dominating peripheral vision, more comfortable for long, half-attentive stretches. Neither choice is a mistake; it's closer to picking a cinema seat than to solving an equation, and the chart above simply marks out where the reasonable range starts and ends for each size.
The rule you've probably seen before
"Diagonal times one and a half" and "distance divided by two" are the two rules of thumb that circulate outside any standard. For a 65 inch, "times 1.5" puts you at 97.5 inches — 2.48 m, close to the SMPTE figure by coincidence more than by design. At 43 inch it gives 1.64 m; at 85 inch, 3.24 m — both land inside this chart's SMPTE-to-THX range too, which is part of why the rule has stuck around despite not being based on either standard. The "divide by two" rule is older and comes from 1080p-era guidance, built for a resolution where sitting too close meant you'd start to see the pixel grid itself. On a 65 inch 1080p panel, half of 65 inches is 32.5 — 0.83 m, uncomfortably close for the field-of-view standards above; at 43 inch it's 0.55 m and at 85 inch 1.08 m, closer than this chart's THX distance at every single size, because the rule was solving a different problem (avoiding visible pixels) rather than choosing a viewing angle.
Does 4K let you sit closer? Yes — and here's the number
On any 4K screen, you stop resolving individual pixels at roughly 60 pixels per degree, which works out to about 2 cm of distance for every inch of diagonal (3 cm on 1440p, 4 cm on 1080p, 1 cm on 8K). A 65 inch 4K panel is pixel-invisible from about 1.29 m — closer than almost anyone actually sits, and closer than either field-of-view standard above would put you. That's the pattern across the whole chart: resolution stopped being the limit years ago, and field of view is now the thing actually deciding how close feels right.
What the chart can't know
It assumes you're sitting dead-centre, alone, at a fixed height, watching one screen. A seat set 1 m to one side of a screen that's 2.5 m straight ahead isn't actually 2.5 m away — Pythagoras puts the real eye-to-screen distance at about 2.69 m, at roughly a 22° angle off the screen's own centre line, not the 0° every distance in the chart above assumes. That matters more than it sounds: an off-axis seat both moves you further away (pushing toward the SMPTE end regardless of which size you picked for) and narrows the effective picture, since you're no longer looking at it square-on.
Multiple rows of seating raise a related problem: the back row needs a genuinely larger screen than the front row's own "ideal" size, not the same one at a worse angle — there's no single size that's correct for both rows at once. Fast-paced sports and competitive gaming tend to reward sitting closer, inside the THX end of the range; slower, dialogue-led viewing tends to suit the SMPTE end, for the reasons in the section above. And none of this says whether the screen physically fits your wall or your media unit — that's a separate question the size-specific dimension pages and the calculator below answer directly.

Common questions
- How far should I sit from a 65 inch TV?
- 1.98 m for an immersive, THX-style 40 degree view; 2.69 m for a relaxed, SMPTE-style 30 degree view. Both are legitimate targets from two different standards — pick based on how much of your field of view you want the screen to fill, not on which number sounds more official.
- Is 2.5 m too close for a 75 inch?
- No — 2.5 m sits inside the comfortable range for a 75 inch, which runs from about 2.28 m (THX, immersive) to 3.10 m (SMPTE, relaxed). It's on the closer, more immersive side of that range rather than in the middle, which is a preference, not a problem.
- Why do TV size calculators disagree?
- Because they're built on different standards for how much of your field of view a screen should fill. THX targets roughly 40 degrees for an immersive, cinema-like experience; SMPTE targets roughly 30 degrees for a more relaxed, general-viewing distance. A calculator that doesn't say which one it's using is picking for you without telling you.
- Does 4K let you sit closer?
- It lets you sit closer before you'd see individual pixels, yes — but that's usually not the binding constraint. At normal living-room sofa distances, most TV sizes are already well past the point where a 4K panel stops resolving pixels at all, so field of view — not resolution — is what actually decides how close feels right.
- Can sitting close to a TV harm your eyes?
- There's no established evidence that viewing distance causes eye damage. Sitting very close for long stretches is more associated with eye strain and fatigue than injury, and even that link is about comfort, not harm — the [American Academy of Ophthalmology](https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/computer-usage) has said as much directly (AAO, checked 6 September 2026). If a distance causes strain, that's a comfort signal to sit further back, not a safety one.
