Every TV size compared to a 65 inch, to scale

A 65 inch TV is 143.90 × 80.94 cm — 11,647 cm² of screen. Everything below is indexed against that. A 75 inch is only 15% wider but 33% more screen. An 85 inch is 31% wider and 71% more. The full range, end to end

The gap between the smallest and largest sizes in this table makes the pattern impossible to miss. A 100 inch is 2.33 times as wide as a 43 inch — but its screen area is 5.4 times as large, not 2.33. Diagonal comparisons compound quietly like this at every step; indexing everything to one size you already have a mental picture of, rather than comparing each pair from scratch, is what makes the scale of the whole range legible at a glance instead of a string of disconnected numbers.

Why width and area disagree so violently

Width is linear — double the diagonal, double the width. Area is squared — double the diagonal, quadruple the area. A 98 inch is only about half again as wide as a 65 (151%) but more than twice the actual screen (227%). That gap is the entire reason "just go one size up" keeps surprising people: the size name moves in a straight line, the thing you actually watch does not.

The one-size-up rule of thumb

Every 5 inches of diagonal is 11.07 cm more width and 6.23 cm more height, for any 16:9 pair anywhere in this range. Every 10 inches is 22.14 cm. Memorise 2.21 cm per inch and you can size any 16:9 TV in your head without a calculator — a 90 inch is roughly 90 × 2.21 = 199 cm wide, close enough to check against a wall before you look anything up properly.

What each step costs you in distance

Moving up a size doesn't just cost wall space — it moves the distance you want to sit back too, though more gently in relative terms. At a SMPTE 30° relaxed-viewing reference: a 65 wants about 2.69 m, a 70 wants 2.89 m, a 75 wants 3.10 m — roughly 20 cm more distance for every 5 inches of diagonal. At a THX 40° immersive reference, the same three sizes want 1.98 m, 2.13 m and 2.28 m — a gentler roughly 15 cm per 5 inches, since the immersive target already sits closer to begin with. The pattern holds regardless of which wall width you're planning around: each size step eats into the clearance either side, and past a certain point — 98 and 100 inch on a 200 cm wall, here — there simply isn't enough wall left at all, regardless of whether the room could otherwise seat you at the right distance.

Why index against a 65, specifically

Most size comparisons online draw two rectangles floating in white space — technically accurate, and almost impossible to feel. A 65 inch works as the anchor here because it's the size most people already have some mental picture of, whether or not they own one: common enough in living rooms, showrooms and other people's homes that "65 inch" already means something before a single number gets attached to it. Indexing every other size to a percentage of that one gives every row in the table above a reference point that's already familiar, rather than two abstract numbers being compared to each other from nothing.

Common questions

How much bigger is a 75 inch TV than a 65?
15% wider (166.04 cm vs 143.90 cm) and 33% more screen area — the area gap is always bigger than the width gap, because area scales with the square of the diagonal, not the diagonal itself.
Is an 85 inch twice the size of a 65?
Not in width — an 85 is 31% wider than a 65. But in area, it's close: 71% more screen, genuinely most of the way to double, even though the size names (65 to 85) only suggest a 20-inch, roughly 31% step.
How much wider is each TV size step?

Viewing distance also grows, but more gently in absolute terms — moving from a 65 to a 75 asks for roughly 20 to 40 cm more distance depending on which standard you're using, while the wall space needed grows by over 22 cm.
